V CARD

Mr. Schmidt has extensive experience representing clients in all types of intellectual property matters.  His experience includes many aspects of complex intellectual property litigation covering a wide variety of technologies, including in the Federal District Courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Judicial Panel for Multi District Litigation.

Mr. Schmidt enjoys fast paced high-tech patent litigation, with a particular emphasis on computer hardware, software, networking technology, network security, and telecommunications.  Mr. Schmidt has also litigated trademark, copyright, and trade secret disputes, and has experience with litigation-focused patent prosecution.

Mr. Schmidt currently focuses primarily on assisting start-up companies and inventors to create, protect, and commercialize complex intellectual property portfolios through a multi-faceted IP enforcement strategy.  His past results include enforcement of a telecommunications patent portfolio securing tens of millions of dollars in judgments and favorable settlements against several of the largest telecommunications companies in the world, and initiating an ITC investigation resulting in an importation ban of infringing products and related multimillion dollar settlement agreements.  Mr. Schmidt has assisted many clients of all sizes in similar efforts to build and protect core IP assets for their business.

Mr. Schmidt also particularly enjoys working with Universities regarding commercialization of cutting edge technology.  His experience includes devising and implementing successful licensing strategies for University IP, working closely with subject matter expert inventors and Professors to understand the relevant technology, and defending University patents before the PTAB.  Some of his more recent work includes the assertion and defense of a patent portfolio related to AI assisted computer security tools.

Before attending The University of Texas School of Law, Mr. Schmidt worked as a senior software design engineer at Compaq Computer Corporation and at several high tech start up companies with a particular focus on firmware engineering for secure enterprise data storage and network security technology.  His engineering experience includes a business centric view of IP creation, protection, and assertion.
